Landlord tells off tenants demanding rent relief

Tenants of a plot in Mowlem estate, Nairobi are regretting their decision to call the landlord for rent relief over Covid-19 effects.

This is after the said landlord frowned upon the request and instead asked them to vacate their houses immediately if they are not able to pay.

According to the source identified as Jared Okinyi, who is also a tenant at the said plot, the tenants were wondering why their landlord demanded rent despite the tough economic times.

Some of them had lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet.

Others work outside the city and due to the cessation of movement they cannot access their workplace.

“I work in a company in Machakos County but right now I cannot go there because of the recent travel restrictions,” said Jared.

The same sentiments were shared by Sylvia Asango who wondered why the landlord was insensitive to their situation.

“I wonder how some people can be inhuman, he is not concerned about our well-being yet some of us have been living here for close to four years” she lamented.

The tenants unanimously decided to approach the landlord over the issue but their grievances fell on deaf ears.

He maintained that he is in business and anyone who is not able to pay should vacate and leave the house to those who are capable.

The landlord emphasized the same through a poster that was put at the gate.
